It is tempting to measure a morning by the number of frames you bring home. But some of the best photographs begin when you stop trying to make something happen.

Find a place, then give it time.

Choose a quiet position with a clear view and a background you like. Before raising your camera, watch. Look for repeated movements, a favourite perch, or a route between feeding spots. The scene becomes easier to read when you let it repeat itself.

Make your decisions before the moment.

Set your exposure, check your shutter speed, and think about the edge of the frame. The more you can settle while things are quiet, the less you need to change when a bird arrives. Leave some room for movement rather than filling every corner.

A morning can be good without a photograph.

Wildlife has its own priorities. Sometimes the light changes, the bird takes another path, or the best thing to do is lower the camera. Coming away with a better understanding of the place is still time well spent.
